Two New Maiden Winners for Stanford

Cypress and Pleasanton, CA (July 2, 2022) – Standford 3-year-olds Cal and Dick Best became the latest maiden winners for their sire as each found the winner’s circle at the venues currently conducting racing in California.

In the spirit of ladies first, Cal took the field wire-to-wire in the 9th race at Los Alamitos going six furlongs. Cal was quickly engaged in a duel for the lead. She cleared the early challengers and then held off the latecomers through the long stretch drive to win by a length and one-half in her second career start.

Cal was bred by Dave Aurelio, whose DNA Racing LLC campaigns the filly with Manlius Stable LLC, Nick Aurelio, Abel Malek Homeidan, Ed Muehlbauer, and Phillip Stupi. Trained by Paul Aguirre, she was produced by the Lucky Pulpit mare, Swiftly Risen.

Dick Best made his first visit to the winner’s circle after the 5th race at Pleasanton going the same six furlong distance and had a bit more complicated trip. The gelding tracked the early pace but he dropped out of contention with two furlongs to go. Looking outrun, he found a new gear inside the final furlong and got up to win by three-quarters of a length.

Dick Best races for his trainer Steve Miyadi. Bred by Nick Alexander, he was produced by the winning Grazen mare, Sadie Clare.
