Albany, CA (April 24, 2021) – Stalking Shadow, our Tommy Town Thoroughbreds’ homebred son of Ministers Wild Cat, made his stakes debut a winning one, with his thrilling victory in the $101,350 California Derby going a mile and one-sixteenth at Golden Gate Fields.
Stalking Shadow has been on the improve since the calendar year changed over. He broke his maiden in mid-January and was coming off consecutive victories in starter allowance and open allowance contests. Trainer Jonathan Wong told the TVG viewers he would need to take another step up and he certainly did.
Stalking Shadow was away in good order from post five and settled into third. The pacesetters set off with a flurry and he was a half-dozen lengths or more away for most of the trip. The gap remained the same at the top of the stretch when jockey Evin Roman asked him for his best. Stalking Shadow responded with a powerful closing kick and a brilliant final furlong to blow past the leader in the final stages and win by a half-length.
The victory takes his earnings to $128,920. The 3-year-old colt was produced by the winning Petionville mare, Silent Stalk.
