Stakes Double at Golden Gate for Grazen

Albany, CA (April 29, 2023) – Grazen daughters Alice Marble and Rose Maddox added to their respective list of stakes victories as they both visited the winner’s circle today at Golden Gate Fields.

Multiple stakes winning 6-year-old Alice Marble led things off with a rousing, come from behind victory in the $76,350 Camilla Urso Stakes going five furlongs over the firm turf course. Near the back of the field of eight after the first half-mile, she unleased a devastating turn of foot in the final furlong to get up in the last jumps to win by a head.

Alice Marble is what the term “model of consistency” defines. Since breaking her maiden in her fourth career start, she has never finished worse than third in her subsequent twelve starts. Overall, she has eight wins, two seconds and three thirds in her sixteen outings and she has earned $515,880. Trained by Phil D’Amato, she is out of the winning More Than Ready mare, Unsung Heroine.

Two races later, 4-year-old Rose Maddox scored her second stakes victory in the $77,250 Golden Poppy Stakes going a mile and one-sixteenth on the turf. Breaking from the inside post in the field of ten, she settled into ground saving trip a half-dozen lengths off the leaders. She moved off the rail and to the outside coming off the final turn. She ran down the leading pair and held another closer safe in the final yards to win by a neck.

A Nick Alexander homebred, as is Alice Marble, Rose Maddox was produced by the multiple stakes-placed Unusual Heat mare, Heat the Rocks. Trained by Steve Miyadi, her consistency rivals that of her stablemate. In fourteen starts, she has won or placed twelve and her earnings now stand at $307,782.
