Del Mar, CA (August 8, 2021) – Grazen filly Iva Toguri showed the maturity of a seasoned performer winning her career debut in the 6th race at Del Mar, a five furlong maiden special weight over the turf course.
Ask any trainer and they will tell you the inside post for a racing debut is not where they necessarily what they would have chosen. Iva Toguri was not bothered being inside of nine other fillies. She was away smoothly and had plenty of speed to race for the lead. She was challenged coming off the turn and as she neared the wire. She fought back in each instance and won by a head.
Iva Toguri is a Nick Alexander homebred and she is trained by Phillip D’Amato. She is out of the winning Bertrando mare, Hey Cowboy. She carries the given name of the World War II propaganda figure, Tokyo Rose, an American citizen who was pardoned by President Gerald Ford in 1977.
