Cypress, CA (July 2, 2021) – Stanford 2-year-olds Carmen Miranda and Drizella kicked off the Independence Day weekend celebrations with maiden special weight victories at Los Alamitos. They are the fourth and fifth winners for California’s Leading Freshman Sire.
Carmen Miranda opened up the card in the 1st race, a five furlong dash featuring a filed of seven debut runners. She chased the pacesetter until deep stretch, catching her late and opening up to win by a lengths in 58.48.
Carmen Miranda, named for the “The Brazillian Bombshell” actress of the 1930s and 40s, is a homebred racing for Nick Alexander. She was produced by the winning Malek (CHI) mare, Miranda Rose and she is trained by Phil D’Amato.
Three races later, Drizella, who had been second in both of her career starts, made her first visit to the winner’s circle in a similar fashion to Carmen Miranda. She didn’t make it easy with a stumble at the start, but she quickly recovered and also chased the leader from second down the backstretch and around the turn. She caught the leader at the top of the stretch, took over and then held off a closer to win by a half-length in 57.95. Another cropmate, Sally Stanford, finished third.
Drizella races for William Peeples and she is trained by Luis Mendez. She was bred by the partnership of McGee Wolfson LLC and is out of the Royal Applause (GB) mare, Tinderella (GB).
